At some point or another we’ve all channeled Carrie Bradshaw be it emotionally or through fashion, usually relating to at least one or the other, (or both) right? I was between the ages of 18-25 during the original Sex and the City series and was constantly inspired by the creations that Patricia Field put together for our beloved quintessential NYC fashion gal. As a budding stylist during that time, I couldn’t wait for each week (and season) to pass to see what she came up with next. The more far-out the better and I appreciated the risk-taking, individualism and creativity. Still taking cues 10 years later (and from Leandra Medine, the real life version of Carrie Bradshaw), I decided to try out the old scarf-around-the-arm styling technique to add interest to this wear-with-everything black cotton jumpsuit by Brooke Coleman. The scarf, which my mama handed down to me a few weeks back from her mother, added meaning beyond just its aesthetic value. I’m also a total sucker for a jumpsuit, especially this one which is SO comfortable that I’ve been living in it all summer. More on this jumpsuit and Brooke Coleman later (stay tuned for a Spotlight Feature in the coming weeks!). In the meantime, in the words of Carrie Bradshaw herself, “So many roads. So many detours. So many choices. So many mistakes.” But in reality, the biggest mistake, is being too afraid to make one at all. Even when it comes to your style.

The craziest part about July is that even though Summer has only just begun, seasonal merchandise is on its way out and designers + brands are just about ready to release Fall. It’s like one big game of catch-up. Lucky for us, fashion is a revolutionary phenomenon and despite a handful of trends coming in and out in the blink of an eye (ahem, Birkenstocks as Leandra Medine discusses in “The Life of a Trend” via ManRepeller), much of what we can get a deal on now will suffice for seasons to come. Win, win all around if you ask me. Items topping my “get ‘em before their gone” list are this dress from Oak that can be worn now and well into fall (adding a second layer and booties when temperatures start to come down), this James Perse shirtdress which can also transition to cooler temperatures seamlessly, this Band of Outsiders wave print crinkle maxi that will live in your closet as the ultimate vacation staple for eternity, this jumpsuit by Dolce Vita that easily goes from day to night, these never-go-out-of-style Belle by Sigerson Morrison neutral gladiator sandals, this white tunic from Tory Burch like the one shown above on Sarah Sherman Samuel, and the cutest beach bag carryall by Sensi Studio.
Find additional sale items at Shopbop, Saks Fifth Avenue and Mango at up to 70% off, Topshop and J.Crew at up to 50% off, H&M at up to 75% off and final reductions at luxury fashion site, Matches Fashion.

Fashion rules like “no white before memorial day” are silly since style is a representation of who you are, and however you wish to express that is acceptable. You can do whatever, whenever and we should all stop listening to the naysayers. With that being said, I wear white all year round – a creamier shade during the colder months and brighter during the warm. Silhouettes and garment details change on a seasonal basis too. White cozy sweaters become white eyelet tanks, white wool trousers become white flowy maxi skirts and a white body-hugging, long sleeve cocktail dress becomes a sleeveless breezy one. I’d consider crafting my entire wardrobe in white. It’s sexy yet demure, clean and fresh. A few new ideas to add to your summer whites…
