“throw a scarf on it”

final photoIn a Portlandia episode spoofing me – we’d be “throwing a scarf on it” rather than “putting a bird on it” (this is a must view!).  Everyone’s got their thing and scarves are mine.  Most days if you don’t see it draped around my neck – you’ll find one in my handbag ready to pull out at a moment’s notice.  They’re one of my all time favorite accessories and with the recent hint of cooler temperatures, I can barely contain my excitement.  Cozier fabrics, rich colors and fresh prints are on the horizon.  In the photo above I wear a 70’s vintage hand-me-down via mama Greenstein, but I recently scooped up this one from Zara as a trendy alternative.  Scarves fulfill both fashion and function objectives adding personality to your overall look while keeping you warm and toasty.  If you live in warmer climate, opt for light fabrics like cotton or silk.  I’m sure you already have one (or many!) from last season, but in case you need a refresher…

style, naturally

DSC_0450 - Version 2Inspired by this post written by Leandra Medine from The Man Repeller, I decided to approach my outfit yesterday from the same perspective, wearing clothes that felt relaxed, comfortable and effortless.  I admittingly spend too many days analyzing my (overflowing) closet with rumblings in my mind of, “I have nothing to wear”.  In these moments I find it’s best to go back to the basics.  It’s when I can stop over thinking it that I feel my best.  Don’t be mistaken – I advocate for taking time to invest into your style.  But I also know what it’s like when things aren’t flowing naturally and you wind up with a mountain of clothing on your bed because, “nothing is working”.  When you’ve tried on endless combinations and even the exact outfit you wore last week feels completely different!  What the F?  Follow your instincts and be aware of which day today is.  Know your mood, your energy and stop trying to fit a square peg into a round hole.  Last nights leather pants may have brought out your inner rock star, but your favorite jeans today (in a less obvious way) could do the same thing!

outerwear-ability

irina lakicevic irina lakicevicIMG_5115Now that fall is here it means winter is just around the corner.  I’ve been on the hunt for a new coat to update my beloved classic H&M one that I’ve had for a bazillion years.  Between lost buttons, rips in the lining and major pilling,  it’s time for a refresher.  Since it was worn it to death, I can justify making the investment into one I’ve been coveting with intentions of endless wearability.  Outerwear is one of those items worth spending a few extra bucks on because you want it to go the distance.  I keep revisiting the By Malene Birger cocoon style shown above on Irina Lakicevic from fashion blog A Portable Package.  Irina wears it in pink which I’m inspired by despite my aversion to color, but I’ll go for black (better for the budget) since it’s versatile and has longevity.  Besides, I can always pop in the trending color pink like such…

bang for your buck!

wishlist - 2

The key to building an efficient wardrobe is finding pieces that can be re-worked into multiple outfits.  To accomplish this, a productive exercise when shopping is to think about what you can pair back to the item you’re eyeing – whether it be with something that exists in your closet or one that you need (i.e., a good pair of denim!).  If you can create 3 – 5 outfit ideas in your head on the spot, this item has potential for a lot of wear (which will also help you determine if it’s worth the investment)!  I recently made this fall wishlist post which included key seasonal pieces like a playful sweatshirt and leather skirt.  Here are four outfit ideas (there are much more!) styled from the edits adding accessories and basics to complete the look!  Your closet doesn’t need to be busting at the seams with endless items.  Always remember, less is more!  Strategizing your wardrobe will not only help you save space and money, but will force you to think about purchasing pieces that you love thus will go the distance.  Happy shopping ya’ll!  xx jenny

layer it on

camo look 2

It’s a beautiful day here in NYC which makes this Friday morning that much sweeter.  Although the weather is still pushing the 75 degree mark during the day, the evenings are getting cooler which means second layers are essential.  Last night I grabbed this one that I picked up from Old Navy knowing that once the sun came down – the temperature would too.   The best part about this jacket isn’t the on trend camouflage print – it’s the price!  A small investment financially that will take you a very long way.  It can be worn with everything through fall (consider camo a neutral this season) and under heavier coats during colder months to add warmth and interest to your overall look!  Have a great weekend!  xx jenny
