Hiya and happy Friday. Last weekend while judging the fashion contest at LIC Flea in honor of New York Fashion Week, I met some wonderful emerging designers, creators and vendors. I loved participating in an event that supports individuals pursuing their dreams. I felt a kinship with them since I’m doing the same. Super inspired by these men and women, I felt connected. Naturally, I got caught up with Deepti, who imports jewelry and accessories from India and scooped up an AMAZING handmade hammered metal choker which I’m wearing in an upcoming style post. I had to stop myself from buying every bangle she had for sale. I adored meeting Jessie Goldenberg, owner of The Nomad Truck, who began her mobile boutique (also e-commerce) in April of 2013. She carries boho inspired apparel items plus locally sourced and handmade jewelry. The experience inside was exactly like she described as, “a little bit gypsy, a little bit rock ‘n roll”. Jessica Aspen Niamath from Aspen Tree Vintage had an awesome assortment of vintage clothes which she sells at the LIC Flea and Etsy, as does Paradox Thrift Shop, which included a curated collection of the best vintage earrings around. And then there were the women behind El Dordo Gift Shop which sold imported textiles and items sourced from Columbia. I especially loved the handwoven drawstring bucket bag which is not only on trend, but handmade by artisans from the Central American region.
I can’t wait to head back to do some more shopping (and to support my fellow dreamers and makers). LIC Flea is just a quick train ride on the 7, E, M or G trains and has epic food trucks to check out while perusing the market. For all you beer enthusiasts, starting this weekend, a beer garden will open featuring artisan brews from Queens. Word on the street is they will be serving $2 beers from 4:30PM to 5PM this weekend. Check it.
